While going through my files I tound this letter from either the late 80s or the early 90s. (I'll have to look up when Kevin Dumont was President.
You'll note some items that no longer apply or are out of date. For example the dues have certainly gone up since then. RPI no longer requires gym credit, so the club no longer provides that. Note also the number of trips with other colleges.
Dear Freshmen,
The other day, while going over our list of members, I noticed that your name wasn't on it. It got me to wondering why. After talking with some other members of the club, we decided to send out another letter of interest to remind you of the club.
First of all, it is not too late to join. We have trips out at all levels of experience just about every weekend. So of course, beginners are always welcome to come along. Don't think that just because you missed the trips earlier in the year that you can't participate on trips now.
Secondly, cost: In my mind the club is such a bargain it is unbelievable. For $15 dollars for the entire year, you are able to take out just about any equipment you might need for personal use (this includes tents, backpacks, sleeping bags, etc). And there is no rental charge. We can provide any technical equipment you might need for club trips, such as caving helmets and lights, cross-country skis, snowshoes, etc. Once again there is no charge (other than for gas and food). Where else can you get a deal
Time: Like I noted in the last letter, time should not be a problem. Many of our trips last a day or less. Remember, we are students too and have just as much work as you do.
Other colleges: Just this past weekend, I had the opportunity to lead a caving trip with people from 4 other colleges. Over 30 people showed up! In the future we will be going to other colleges for trips. In the works is a trip to McGill College, so if you have ever wanted to see Montreal, stop by and get details.
Gym Credit: Think about it, would you like to get a gym credit sitting in a musty locker room or would you rather earn a gym credit by climbing out on a rock and enjoying the view, or skiing through the middle of the woods on newly fallen snow? I know which I would rather do!
Any way, I think I have given more than enough reasons for you to join, but to give you an idea of the sort of trips coming up, I will include a short calendar of upcoming events:
So, with all this information, I hope that this is more than enough to encourage you to join. Remember, meetings are every Tuesday night at 7:00pm in CC330. If you can't make the meetings, stop by the basement of the Armory on Friday's 4-6pm and check out our equipment room.
If you have any further questions, please feel to contact one of us below.
